What exactly is x402, in one sentence?

An open protocol where an AI agent pays your API over plain HTTP: your endpoint answers with a 402 payment challenge, the agent pays USDC on Base L2, and the call goes through. It is the checkout lane Coinbase built for machines.

Do you hold my money?

Never. Settlement goes on-chain straight to your wallet. Our facilitator verifies and settles; the money never touches an account of ours.

Which chains and tokens?

Base L2 (eip155:8453), USDC, settled through Coinbase CDP. More networks as the spec adopts them.

My stack isn't Node/Python. Does it matter?

No. x402 is three HTTP concerns: the 402 response, payment verification, and settlement. We integrate with whatever serves your route — Flask, Go, Rust, serverless, nginx in front of anything.

What if x402 changes under us?
